A website is often needed before there is a budget for a designer, developer, and technical support. There is a service, a course, a portfolio, a small store, or an idea that needs to be shown to people quickly. In this situation, you do not have to launch a large project right away. At first, a working version is enough: a page where it is clear what you offer, who needs it, and how to contact you.
It is better to start not with a template, but with the task. A website can collect requests, present services, run a blog, show a portfolio, test a new direction, or work as a simple catalog. If you formulate this at the beginning, it will be easier to choose a tool and not waste time on unnecessary things.
What tools can be used without a developer
For a quick start, there are website builders: Wix, Google Sites, Tilda, Webflow, SITE123, and similar services. They allow you to build a page from ready-made blocks without programming. This is convenient for a landing page, portfolio, event page, service test, or a simple website for advertising.
But free plans almost always have limitations: a service address instead of your own domain, platform advertising, fewer features, weaker SEO settings, or paid connection of your own address. For testing an idea, this is fine. For a business that needs to look reliable, it is better to think about your own domain right away.
The second option is WordPress. It is more complex than a builder, but gives more control. On WordPress, you can create a company website, blog, informational resource, service page, or small catalog. You need hosting, a domain, a design theme, and basic settings, but the website is not so tightly tied to one platform.
AI tools should also be considered separately. They help with texts, page structure, block ideas, a prototype, or simple code. And here, OpenAI Sites is a noticeable example.
What OpenAI Sites is and what can be done with it
OpenAI Sites is a tool in Codex for creating, saving, launching, and viewing interactive websites, web apps, and simple projects. To put it simply: the user describes an idea, and Codex helps turn it into a working version.
Through Sites, you can try to build a landing page for a course or service, a page with a request form, a simple catalog, a calculator, an internal dashboard, a mini-service, an interactive prototype, or even a small browser game. This is no longer just generating text for a website, but a quick way to see an idea in action.
Sites is most useful at the prototype stage. For example, you can describe: “make a page for booking a consultation” or “build a simple dashboard for tracking requests” and see how it could work. You do not need to immediately deal with layout, files, or deployment.
But this is not a full replacement for development. Sites is currently available in preview for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, so it is not yet a mass free builder for everyone. The result needs to be checked: texts, logic, mobile adaptation, forms, security, and overall usability.
Website launch algorithm
To avoid getting lost, it is better to move along a simple route:
- Formulate the website’s task. Not “a website is needed,” but “a page for requests is needed,” “a blog for articles,” “a portfolio,” “a catalog,” or “an idea test.”
- Prepare the minimum content: name, short description, services or products, contacts, photos, examples of work, prices or terms, if they exist.
- Choose a tool. For a quick check, a builder or an AI prototype will work. For a website that you plan to develop, it is better to consider WordPress. If you have access to OpenAI Sites, it can be used for the first interactive version.
- Build the basic page. It is not worth making a large website right away. It is better to launch a clear first version and then refine it according to real needs.
- Register a domain. Your own address looks more reliable and works better in advertising, social networks, and email.
- Decide on hosting. In builders, hosting is usually included in the platform. For WordPress, separate hosting is needed. If the project grows or requires more resources, you can move to a VPS.
- Connect an SSL certificate for HTTPS and check the website before publication: mobile version, request form, buttons, contacts, loading speed, and the absence of test phrases.
Who this approach is suitable for
A self-made launch is suitable for freelancers, craftsmen, consultants, small companies, local businesses, course creators, photographers, lawyers, repair teams, and anyone who needs to quickly show a service or test demand.
It is also a normal option for temporary pages: an event announcement, promo page, test of a new direction, or a simple website for advertising. OpenAI Sites and similar AI tools are especially useful here because they allow you not just to describe an idea in words, but to quickly see it in operation.
Who should look for a more serious solution
If the website has to accept payments, work with personal accounts, store client data, synchronize with a CRM, have a complex catalog, booking, or a large load, a builder or AI prototype is better treated only as the first sketch.
For online stores with a large number of products, learning platforms, financial accounts, medical or legal projects, not only the page matters, but also security, stability, backups, and correct work with data. Here, it is better to plan a more serious technical foundation right away.
Launching a website without a large budget is realistic. The main thing is not to start with a chaotic set of blocks. First the task, then content, tool, domain, hosting, SSL certificate, and a check before launch. Then the first version of the website will not be a temporary placeholder, but a normal foundation for development.
